What is Sublimation Iron-on-Ink?
It is an interesting and fun product that allows you to create a design on standard copy paper that can then be heat transferred onto surfaces (must have polyester in it or have a polyester coating). Once the project is transferred to the blank, it is lifetime permanent. Before Artesprix, you would need a fancy printer to experience this level of personalization, but not anymore!
Supplies:
Sublimation Acrylic Paint - Black
Sequin Pillowcase - Blank
Household items to use as stamps
Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plate
Brayer
Computer Paper
Heat Press
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Step 1: To create a template for such a large blank, I cut four 7.5” x 7.5” pieces of paper.
Step 2: Use a brayer to apply Black Sublimation Acrylic Paint onto a Gel Printing Plate.
Step 3: Use household items (like washers or pieces of PVC pipe etc.), to “stamp” patterns onto each of the paper pieces to create a pattern (press items into paint on a gel plate and then apply to paper).
Step 4: Use a Black Sublimation Ink pad to edge each of the paper pieces with black ink.
Step 5: Arrange the 4 stamped pieces of paper to your preference.
Step 6: Place the pillowcase over a layer of protective paper. Place finished design onto the Sequin Pillowcase and secure with heat tape.Place another piece of Protective Paper over the project creating a "Sublimation Sandwich."
Pro Tip: Use tweezers to ensure all your sequins are white side up before securing your design.
Step 7: Heat set using appropriate settings for the blank. Artesprix Sequin Pillows call for 400℉ with a transfer time of 60 seconds. If you heat source is smaller than your design, like mine is, rotate it around and heat set in sections.
Step 8: After heat set, take-a-peek at a portion of the transfer to ensure transfer was successful (do not remove tape until transfer is confirmed). Re-heat if needed.
Step 9: Remove paper to reveal the transferred design.
So, go search your junk drawer and garage for items that will create interesting patterns and make an abstract Sequin Pillowcase of your own with Artesprix Sublimation Inks and Paint. Or you could use this technique with any sublimation blank and Iron-on-Ink. Then brag to your friends about how you made a creative piece of art with reused items that were bound for the trash. Happy Day!
