It’s that time of year! The kids are back in school, loaded with all the necessary school supplies. This includes books and if they’ve got books, they’re going to need bookmarks too.

My youngest is always losing her paper bookmarks so I thought she could start the year with a cool new DIY bookmark made from metal instead. By using my Artesprix Sublimation Markets and a little creativity, not only will this bookmark be easier to keep track of but it’ll be much cuter too!

What Are Artesprix Sublimation Markers?

If you enjoy getting creative, you’re going to love working with Artesprix Sublimation Markers. There are so many things that you can do with them, from making personalized tote bags, grilling aprons, coasters, key chains, bag tags, and more.

All you do is draw your design on regular paper, then use a heat source to transfer it to your blank. You’ll like how easy the process is and you’ll love how amazing your finished project looks!

If you’re just getting started with Artesprix Markers and Sublimation, this simple Artesprix Iron-on-Ink Sublimation Bookmark idea is perfect. Even the kids can make them (they’ll just need a parent’s help with the heat source). When they use a cute bookmark that they made themselves, it may even encourage them to read more!

How To Make A DIY Bookmark

  1. Start by tracing the Artesprix Iron-on-Ink Sublimation Bookmark on plain copy paper. Don’t forget to trace the curved part on the inside too. This will help you keep track of the size of the area you’re working with. If you want to fill your entire Artesprix Bookmark with color don’t be afraid to color outside of your traced lines. That way you won’t leave any white space on your blank after the transfer.

2. Use a pencil to draw your text and images. If you prefer to just draw your images freehand, you can skip this step. The text is the most important part here because in the next step you’ll have to mirror it.

Trace your Artesprix Bookmark on a new sheet of copy paper.

3. I like to use a lightbox to mirror the text but if you don’t have one, you can also mirror text by placing the paper against a window.

4. Now for the fun part! Take the markers and start coloring your design for your Artesprix Iron-on-Ink Sublimation Bookmark.

5. When you’re coloring in the background of your Artesprix Iron-on-Ink Sublimation Bookmark, it’s totally fine if you go outside the lines. In fact, it’s recommended because it’ll keep you from ending up with any white areas around the edges.

6. Now, lay the Artesprix Iron-on-Ink Sublimation Bookmark on top of your design, with the white side down. Secure it in place with Artesprix Heat Tape.

7. Turn your heat press to 400° (or turn your iron up to the highest setting) and grab your Artesprix Protective Paper while it preheats.

9. Once your heat press has reached 400° degrees Fahrenheit, you can create what we call a sublimation sandwich. Place a sheet of protective paper on the heat press, then lay your bookmark on top, with the ink side facing up. Finally, top it with another piece of protective paper. Essentially, the protective paper is your “bread” and the Artesprix Iron-on-Ink Sublimation Bookmark is the “meat” of the sandwich.

10. Heat for 45 seconds, then carefully remove the Artesprix Iron-on-Ink Sublimation Bookmark from the heat press and place it on your Artesprix Protective Project Mat. Caution this is a metal blank so be sure to use your Heat Goves or Kitchen Oven Mitts when handling.

11. This is my favorite part, the big reveal! It is amazing how bright and vibrant the colors become once the heat is applied…so pretty

This bookmark was so simple and fun that I decided to make a few more! My youngest is really into Harry Potter so I made a themed bookmark for her. I made another one with butterflies, just because.

These DIY bookmarks work for more than just back to school. Have the kids make them at a birthday party, make them for book club or invite a couple friends over for crafting night.

I love all these designs and can’t wait to make even more! What kind of DIY bookmark would you create?
