Create a Holiday Sequin Pillow Case with Artesprix
Hi crafters! It's Design Team Member Debbie back with the last blog for Term 9. For my final Design Team project I am lucky enough to be working with a very exciting sublimation blank, the Sequin Pillow Case. These are available in 3 color combinations which makes them perfect for any holiday or gift giving opportunity. I will also be working with the innovative Heat Transfer Mask from Artesprix. If you have yet to work with this sublimation tool, it's great for creating intricate designs or patterns without a lot of time.

What is Artesprix Iron-on-Ink?
Artesprix Iron-on-Ink is a game-changer for crafters. It's a specialized sublimation ink that allows you to transfer vibrant designs onto compatible surfaces with heat and pressure. Unlike traditional sublimation, which requires expensive printers, Artesprix makes it accessible for all makers. Once your design is transferred, it's permanently infused, making it durable and long-lasting.
Supplies:
Sublimation Sequin Pillow Case
Protective Project Mat
Catherine Pooler White Christmas Stamp Set
Catherine Pooler White Christmas Die Set
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Step 1: The pillow measures about 16in x 16in. I don’t have any paper that large, so I took 2 large sheets of watercolor paper.
Step 2: Paint the whole thing with red Artesprix paint to start the background for our transfer.
Step 3: Then I did a little paint mixing to make a darker red using the Color Mixing Chart. Next I stamped snowflakes from the Catherine Pooler White Christmas Stamp Set randomly in the darker ink.
Step 4: Prep the Sequin Pillow Case by flipping the sequins white side up.
Pro Tip: Use a tweezer for any sequins that give you trouble!
Step 5: While the paint is drying, die cut out a dozen plus snowflakes from the coordinating die set out of Artesprix Heat Resistant Transfer Mask.
Step 6: Remove the clear backing on each snowflake and randomly placed the snowflakes all over the white sequined side of the pillow.
Step 7: Trim the red panel down an inch or so in order to fit it onto the pillow case.
Pro Tip #2: Trial and error taught me that the heat tape really didn’t want to stick to the fabric back, to it was better just to tape it (and tape it well) to the sequins.
Step 8: Make your "sublimation sandwich" like this, protective paper on the bottom (bottom bun), your blank with taped design (the blank is the burger, the design in the cheese), and another layer of the protective paper on top (top bun).
Step 9: Artesprix has temperature and time settings listed with each blank on their website. For the Sequin Pillow, it calls for 400 °F for 60 seconds.
Step 10: Because my design is larger than my heat source platen, it must be pressed using a "tile technique". It took me 4 separate presses of pressing down, lifting straight up, and keeping still during each 60 second transfer.
Step 11: I did a sneak peek by lifting up a corner of the transfer, and it looked good, so I removed the watercolor paper with the design.
Pro Tip #3: This did not turn out has intended, here is why: Due to multiple presses, the color is intense in some places and lighter in others. I learned that for projects where the tile technique is needed, using colors that are not similar will yield better results. For example black would have been a better choice with red as opposed to a darker shade of red. If i had used a Heat Press it would have resulted in a more consistent press, but that's the fun in DIY!
Step 12: Once the Sequin Pillow is cool to the touch, carefully remove the Heat Transfer Mask snowflake designs.
Step 13: The snowflakes really make this project fun, I love the end result!
