What are Sublimation Arts & Crafts Supplies

The word "sublimation" is a chemistry term that describes the process of a substance (like Iron-on-Ink) going from a solid state to a gaseous phase and skipping over the liquid phase. In the world of designing custom goods, sublimation offers a permanent way to transfer a design to a polyester surface. The result is a vibrant, custom designed product that is long-lasting and durable. If you’ve always wanted to try sublimation but thought you needed an expensive, specialty printer, you’re in luck because Artesprix makes it possible to sublimate without a sublimation printer!

Supplies:

Sequin Zip Case Blank of the Month

Artesprix Paint - Purple, Blue & White

100 lb. Cover Cardstock, or thicker

Paint Brush

Protective Paper

Heat Tape

Heat Tape Dispenser

Protective Project Mat

Heat Resistant Gloves

Multi Purpose Cleaner.

Copy Paper

Pencil

Scissors

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Step 1: As with many projects, you’ll want to start off by tracing around your blank onto some plain copy paper.

Step 2: Mix your favorite sublimation paint colors and just paint casual brushstrokes across your paper. I gradually added more and more white paint to lighten the colors for an ombre effect. In retrospect, I should have mixed 3 separate shades of indigo using the white lightning medium to adjust the darkness.

Pro Tip: These paints are so vibrant and powerful that any white layered on top of a sublimation paint color will not affect it. The sublimation paint pushes through the white layered paint and you miss the intended affect.

Step 3: While the paint is drying, use a cutting machine to cut the word love out of card stock. The key here is the thickness of the paper, I recommend 100 lb. cover. You can cut out a name, a logo, an image, etc. We will be using this as a mask, so you want to apply adhesive on the correct side. This will not work with regular copy paper because the paint is so powerful. I cut out the word "Love".

Step 4: Position and adhere down your cut out text with tape runner. Ensure it is very secure as we do not want it to shift during transfer.

Step 5: Prepare for Step 6 by wiping the sequins clean to remove oils, debris, etc. Then flip all the sequins so the white side is showing.

Step 6: Tape your design to your blank using Heat Tape.

Step 7: Sandwich your blank with your design taped to it with Protective Paper under it and on top of it.

Step 8: Press with your heat source at 385℉ for 45 seconds.

Step 9: Gently lift a small corner of your design to do a little “peek test” to see if your design has transferred. If you see nice, vibrant colors, you are good to go!  If it doesn’t look like your design is complete or it’s not vibrant, heat again and try adding a bit more pressure.

Step 10: After your project has cooled, peel off your design.
