Hi Everyone! My name is Sarah Goulet from A Paper Moment. It’s time for another Blank of the Month! For the month of December, the Artesprix Blank of the Month is the Pillow Sham. What are Artesprix Sublimation Arts & Crafts Supplies?

Artesprix has produced specially formulated products that permanently transfer a design you create onto a polyester or polyester coated substrate (the blank) through a mechanism called sublimation. Sublimation is a chemical process in which the combination of heat and pressure allows the solid form of the design to turn into a gas and permanently integrate into your project so it won’t peel or fade. What’s great is that along with the Artesprix sublimation arts and craft supplies such as Sublimation Markers, Paints, and Inks, you can easily utilize items you may already have such as stamps, stencils, and electronic cutting machines for quick and easy projects.

Sublimation Markers - Basic Fine 10ct

Heat Tape

Protective Paper Roll

Protective Project Mat

Copy/Printer Paper

Electronic Cutting Machine

Step-By-Step Tutorial:

Step 1: Convert a photo of your pet into an SVG file. Alternatively, find a pet SVG file you want to use. Upload this into your electronic cutting machine design software.

Step 2: In your electronic cutting machine design software, size the SVG so it’s large enough to be the focal point. The Artesprix Pillow Sham is 14”x14” so there’s lots of space you can utilize. My pet SVG came out to about 7.5”x9.” Choose a fun font to write your pet’s name. I sized this to about 4”x2.5.” Depending on how large your pet’s name is, the sizing may need to be adjusted. Don't forget to mirror!

Step 3: Attach the Artesprix Black Basic Fine Sublimation Marker into your machine, using an adapter if needed. Place a piece of letter size copy paper (8.5” x 11”) onto your cutting mat.

Step 4: With the settings set to Draw (Pen)/Sketch, transfer your pet design to the copy paper. Using a second piece of copy paper with the settings to create your pet’s name.

Step 5: Fill in any areas of your design with the Black Basic Fine Sublimation Marker.

Pro Tip: Reference your SVG File to see what areas need to be filled in. I set my Operation to Cut so the solid areas would be visible.

Pro Tip 2: Pre-press your Pillow Sham to get rid of any potential creases.

Step 6: Secure the finished design onto the pillow sham with Heat Tape. It will need to be pressed two separate times since my heat source is smaller than my design.

Step 7: Time to prepare a “sublimation sandwich.” Take a piece of Protective Paper cut to just shy of 14” to place inside the Pillow Sham. To prevent the back seam of the Pillow Sham from causing any transfer disruptions, place the Small Protective Project Mat, or pressing pillow into the Pillow Sham. Next, place your secured project in-between two pieces of  Protective Paper.

Step 8: Press your design for 60 seconds at 385℉.

Step 9: With your heat protective gloves on, peel back a corner for a “peek test” to see if your design successfully transferred. If the transfer wasn’t complete, press again. If the transfer was successful, let the blank cool.

Step 10: Peel off the design, and reveal your personalized pet Pillow Sham!

Wasn’t this a fun project to commemorate your pet? I’ll have to make another one for my other dog; she was getting jealous during the photo shoot. This project is great if you ever want to honor a loved one’s pet or to memorialize a pet that may have passed.

Hi Debi! You do need to mirror the design in your electronic cutting machine at least for the name. I mirrored both name and dog. For turning the photo into a line drawing I first removed the background of the photo. There are various free sites that will do this. After downloading the background free photo, I uploaded it into picsvg.com to convert it to an SVG file. If you click on Filters on this website, you can choose which version looks best to you. Download that when complete and upload your new SVG into your electronic cutting machine. Make sure it’s welded (if using Cricut) so it’s one image and not a bunch of separate layers. I hope this helps!

I was wondering if you need to mirror the design? Plus could you recommend a web site to turn the picture into the line SVG? Thank you I can’t wait to try this!!
