Witchy Door Hanger with Artesprix Iron-on-Ink

Artesprix Design Team
Door Hanger, Markers, Stamp Pads
Hello! I’m Alison Heikkila and I am really glad you stopped by today. My latest sublimation project for Artesprix is Halloween themed…though if you know me at all, I have some Halloween decorations out all year, and this will definitely be one of them. It’s a Door Hanger, and what’s really cool is that it’s double sided! So you can do lots of fun things with your Iron-on-Ink!

What is Iron-on-Ink?
Artesprix Sublimation Markers, Ink, and Paint are specially formulated to allow you to use basic copy paper to: color, stamp, stencil, and monoprint anything you wish and turn it into a heat-transferable design. These designs are then applied to a polyester or polyester coated substrate with heat and pressure. You can use a heat press or a home iron! These designs, through this process of sublimation, will become permanent on your substrates.

Supplies:
Door Hanger
Ink Pads ( Black, Green, and Purple)
Original Sublimation Markers
Protective Paper
Heat Tape
Heat Source: Home Iron or Heat Press
Blending Brushes (A dedicated brush for each color)
Lots of Halloween stamps! The stamps I used are all discontinued, but try to use stamps on the smaller side so that they can fit in the hook and around the words.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Step 1: Trace the Door Hanger with a pencil on to a piece of copy paper to create your template.

Step 2: On the back side of the copy paper, I wrote out “The Witch is In” using pencil. Then using my light-box (you can also use a window), I flipped the paper over and rewrote the words so that they were backwards. You need to have your letters & numbers backwards when you sublimate so that they are facing the correct way when transferred. The Artesprix Door Hanger is double-sided, so I started another design with “The Witch is Out” on a second piece of copy paper. I also sketched the hat in pencil.

Step 3: Ink blend Purple and Green Artesprix ink all over the Door Hanger template. I went around the hat. I wanted a brushy, imperfect look, so I didn’t over-blend or make things smooth.

Step 4: Add your stamps to the design using the Black Sublimation Stamp Pad and color in the words with the Black Sublimation Marker. If there are other areas you want to add color, you can use the markers and/or paint.

Step 5: Once your design is finished and dry, secure the design to the Door Hanger using Heat Tape.

Step 6: Time for the "Sublimation Sandwich"! Add a layer of Protective Siliconized Paper to the top and bottom of your Blank. Your sandwich will be: Protective Paper, Colored Design, Blank, Protective Paper. The Protective Paper prevents any designs from accidentally transferring to your work surfaces, like your heat platen or mat, or the opposite side of your blank.

Step 7: Sublimate the Door Hanger for 90 seconds at 400℉.
Step 8: Time for the "Peek Test"! Carefully lift a small portion of your design off of the Blank to ensure your transfer was successful. If you need to re-press your piece, you can do it since you have not moved the design out of place. I did not like the way I colored the hat, so I carefully recolored it without removing the tape and I pressed the design again.

Here is one side of the finished Door Hanger with the original design. That green really pops now!

Repeat the above steps to sublimate the other side of the Door Hanger, which I think came out pretty great.

Here's the Door Hanger hanging in my dining room. This was such a fun project, especially because it's double sided, double the creativity!
