Stenciled Poinsettia Pillow Sham Using Sublimation Ink Pads

Artesprix Design Team
Blank of the Month, Pillow Sham, Stamp Pads

Hello! I am Design Team Member Paula from Paula’s Studio. I am primarily a paper crafter who loves to make greeting cards but I also love using paper and my creativity to make other things. My excitement for Artesprix products comes from the ability to use the inks in different forms and techniques to expand on the options of how I can use my skills and artwork. I decorated an Artesprix Pillow Sham using Artesprix Sublimation Ink Pads and stencils.

What are Artesprix Sublimation Arts & Crafts Supplies?

Sublimation is the process of taking a solid ink and applying heat and pressure to allow it to vaporize skipping the liquid state. This causes the ink to permanently adhere to the surface if it is primarily a form of polyester or poly-coating as the heat causes the surface to accept the gases leaving behind vibrant and permanent colors. Commercially, printers are used to print the designs. Artesprix provides products such as markers, ink pads, and paints to allow us to create projects at home without committing to a printer and lets us dip into our creative side too.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Step 1: Instead of tracing the blank, use a whole sheet or more of copy paper as the blank is larger than a single sheet of paper.

Step 2: Stencil several flowers and sentiment on the papers. Layering stencils use registration marks to guide placement of each stencil. Use pencil to mark these as it will not transfer to the blank. Be sure to secure your stencils to the work surface with tape or magnets.

Step 3: Fill the pages with flowers and optional sentiment.

Pro Tip: It is okay to have too many as you can save them for a different project.

Step 4: Lay out the Pillow Sham flat. Insert Artesprix Protective Paper inside the Pillow Sham to protect from ink. Insert a pressing pillow to create a barrier from the pocket seams that run through the center of the sham.

Step 5: Cut apart the flowers and the sentiment and lay them out on the Pillow Sham. Use Artesprix Heat Tape to secure each piece in place. Be sure not to overlap them in a manner to block ink from transferring to the fabric.

Step 6: Create a "sublimation sandwich" by placing your secured project between two pieces of protective paper.

Step 7: Press with heavy pressure at 385℉ for 60 seconds.

Step 8: Be cautious this step is HOT, please use heat protection gloves. After 60 seconds, lift a corner of the paper and peek to ensure that the ink is transferred and vibrant on the pillow sham. If not, heat again and do another test. Once you confirmed your transfer is vibrant, remove the project from the heat source.

Step 9: Once cool, remove the paper and reveal your artwork. This is a double sided blank. Allow to cool before transferring to the other side and different areas.
