Homemade Sublimation Spin Art Magnets with Artesprix

Artesprix Design Team
Coloring Book, Magnets, Paints

Hi Everyone! It’s Sarah from A Paper Moment. Remember doing spin art as a child? Well I’m bringing back some nostalgia with a fun spin art project using the new Made in the USA 2oz Artesprix Sublimation Inks as well as the new Sublimation Coloring Books! I invited my niece over to create with me, and she had so much fun! This project is great for kids and kids at heart!

What are Artesprix Sublimation Arts & Crafts Supplies?

Artesprix has produced specially formulated products that permanently transfer a design you create onto a polyester or polyester coated substrate (the blank) through a mechanism called sublimation. Sublimation is a chemical process in which the combination of heat and pressure allows the solid form of the design to turn into a gas and permanently integrate into your project so it won’t peel or fade. What’s great is that along with the Artesprix sublimation arts and craft supplies such as Sublimation Markers, Paints, and Inks, you can easily utilize items you may already have such as stamps, stencils, and electronic cutting machines for quick and easy projects.

Supplies:

Magnet - 4ct

Sublimation Ink

Sublimation Markers - Basic Chisel

Sublimation Coloring Book - Alphabet - Print

Spin art machine (you can buy one or build one. It’s a great STEAM project for kids)

Heat Tape

Protective Paper Roll

Protective Project Mat

Copy/Printer paper

Heat Source

Heat Protective Gloves

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Step 1: Cut or tear a piece of copy paper into quarters (or to whatever size fits your spin art machine).

Step 2: Secure one of the quarter pieces onto the spin art machine. Mine is home built, so I used Heat Tape to secure it as it holds on but doesn’t tear the paper.

Step 3: Turn on the machine. Drop various colors of ink onto the spinning paper. Try different techniques like moving the bottle across as you squeeze or squeeze dots in various places. You will get a unique design each time!

Pro Tip 1: Have fun! You can easily make so many designs. Experiment with color combos. I wouldn’t do all inks at once because you risk making muddy colors. We got carried away and ended up making 12 designs. A single piece of copy paper will allow for multiple designs as the magnets are 2.5” x 2.2.”

Step 4: Set the spin art pieces aside to dry. Pull out the Sublimation Coloring Book - Alphabet Print and pick out which letters you want to color. Use the Sublimation Markers to color them.

Step 5: After the spin art ink designs are dry, secure them to the magnets with Heat Tape. Trim any excess paper.

Step 6: Place the secured design and magnet in between 2 pieces of Protective Paper for your “sublimation sandwich.”

Pro Tip 2: The magnets are small enough that you can press them all at once if your heat source is big enough. Otherwise, you can press them individually.

Step 7: On a sturdy surface, place the “sandwich” on the Protective Project Mat with the design closest to the heat source. Press for 75 seconds at 400℉.

Step 8: Using heat protective gloves, peel back a corner to do a “peek test.” If the design is vibrant on your blank, it successfully sublimated. If not, place the corner back down and press again. This only works if you don’t move the tape out of place.

Step 9: Let the magnets cool. You can stop here and just have the beautiful spin art design on the magnets. For more personalization, secure the Sublimation Coloring Book images from Step 4 onto the magnets.

Step 10: Follow Steps 6-8 with new pieces of Protective Paper.

Step 11: Let the magnets cool completely. Reveal your designs!

Spin art is so fun! You can use this project as an interactive activity for children. Remember, adult supervision is required when using a heat source to press the designs. My niece had a blast creating spin art magnets. She’s excited to use them!
