Artesprix Abstract Blank of the Month Sign

Lori here, and I am very excited to be sharing my first official Design Team Blog with you. You may have seen me on the Artesprix Blog before as a Guest, but for the next 6 months you will see my work on here a lot and I can't wait to share inspirational Iron-on-Ink ideas with you! Today I'm back with a new Sublimation project using Artesprix Iron-on-Inks and Paint. We are now thoroughly into Fall in my neck of the woods and I thought a “Happy Fall” Decorative Sign would be the perfect addition to my Fall decorations. And can I just say…I love this sublimation ready Decorative Sign by Artesprix. It is only available in the Artesprix Shop for the Month of November 2022 so be sure to snag one if you want to try it!

What is Sublimation Iron-on-Ink?

It is an interesting and fun product that allows you to create a design on standard copy paper that can then be heat transferred onto surfaces (must have polyester in it or have a polyester coating). Once the project is transferred to the blank, it is lifetime permanent. Before Artesprix, you would need a fancy printer to experience this level of personalization, but not anymore!

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Step 1: With a pencil, trace guidelines onto plain copy paper. Then trace out a Fall phrase using the Artesprix Modern Alphabet stencil. Color in with Artesprix Black Markers. Make sure your mirror your text since we are working with Sublimation, and don't worry about the pencil lines, they will not transfer to your final project. Then, cut out phrase and set aside.

Step 2: On a Silicone Mat, or other non-porous surface, spread Artesprix Lightening Medium Acrylic with palette knife. Spread to approximate shape and size of your Decorative Sign (8"x10").

Step 3: Using whichever colors you desire, add a few drops of Sublimation Stamp Ink Refills (I chose purple, orange, green) onto Lightening Medium.

Step 4: Give the paint/ink a few good spritz of water.

Step 5: Drag a palette knife through the medium/ink to mix. Wiggle the knife a bit to create flow and interest, but don't mix too much.

Step 6: Press a piece of copy paper onto the medium/ink mixture and lift. Allow to dry completely.

Step 7: Once design is dry, you can add additional design elements. Use your favorite Fall stamps and Artesprix's Black Sublimation Stamp Ink Pad to add additional designs. You can also water down Sublimation Black Acrylic Paint and apply splatters.

Step 8: After you're satisfied with your finished sublimation design and it is dry, we are ready to press. Secure your design to your Decorative Sign with Heat Tape.

Pro Tip: Tear the edges of your design to add additional design elements.

Step 9: Create a "Sublimation Sandwich" with Artesprix's Protective Paper. Cut two pieces bigger than your Sign and place one on the bottom and one on top.

Step 10: Press. Different Sublimation Blanks call for different transfer times and various temperatures. This Blank calls for 400℉ with a elapsed time of 105 seconds. Be sure to place your "Sandwich" under your heating element as shown, with blank underneath your design.

Step 11: Once time is up, conduct a "peek test" to ensure your transfer was successful. If not, check the position of your "Sandwich", heat source setting, and re-press.  before and after sublimation artesprix transfer

Step 12: After a successful "peek test", remove the design to reveal your transfer. Allow blank to cool.

Step 13: Add the phrase we created in Step 1. Once blank is completely cooled, repeat Steps 8-12 with the added text. You could also add this phrase to your design in Step 7 to ensure the second transfer doesn't affect your first transfer.

Step 14: Add the ribbon that is included with your Decorative Sign or add your own with a color that matches your sign, twine, or whatever you prefer!
I just Love, Love Love this project! I think I will be making a sublimation Decorative Sign for each and every holiday!
