Step-by-Step Tutorial:

Step 1: I created a design on a letter size piece of copy in a design software called Canva. The printed from a normal inkjet laser printer. The letter size paper was just the size I needed to center on my pillow case sublimation blank.

Pro Tip: When using any text while sublimation, it should be flipped and backwards, so that when pressed, will read correctly on final project. You can find stamps and stencils on Artesprix’s website that already have the text flipped, but you can also use editing programs to clip text, as well.

Step 2: Use your Sublimation Markers to trace and fill in the printed letters “I AM” and “TIRED” with the magenta marker from the Bold set. You will need to make sure you are covering over the letters satisfactorily for a good clean press.

Pro Tip #2: To ensure no unknown inks will transfer to your final blank, best practice is to trace on a new sheet of copy paper with Iron-on-Ink.

Step 3: I want to fill in the word “SNOW” with a lighter blue. I take my Acrylic Lightening White Paint for Sublimation Paint and mix with the Blue using a coffee stirrer in a small mixing cup. Mix paint with stirrer and continue adding drops of white until you achieve the color you are wanting.

Step 4: Apply paint with a brush over the word, “SNOW”.

Step 5: Allow paint to dry.

Step 6: I grabbed these amazing snowflakes from Sizzix, an acrylic stamp block and 3 colors of Sublimation Ink Pads from Artesprix in Pink, Blue and Purple.

Step 7: Place your cling stamps on the stamp block and stamp random snowflakes in varying sizes, if desired or stick to just one of your favorites…that is totally up to you.

Step 8: Use scissors to cut around your designs, leaving a small margin.  This helps to prevent any harsh lines or ghosting, especially when using a hand-held press.

Step 9: Secure your design with the ink face down on your project, centered, and secure with heat tape.

Pro Tip #3: Use more tape than you think you need if using a hand-held, to prevent any shifting. It also helps during your peek test if you need to repress.

Step 10: Create a sublimation sandwich, cut 3 pieces of Protective Paper, and place one inside your Pillow Case. Place one sheet of Protective Paper on your Project Mat or base, add secured project, and place additional piece of Protective Paper on top.

Step 11: Press at 400℉ for 45 seconds.

Step 12: Perform a peek test by lifting up a small area to see if your colors are vibrant and have transferred properly to the sublimation blank. If not, you can re-secure the tape and press again. If it looks good, you can remove the tape.

Step 13: After removing the tape, you now have the best part, the big reveal! Notice the difference in color between the before and after!

As I post my last Blank of the Month blog  on the DT at Artesprix, I’m thrilled to be able to share ideas that combine our current craft “collection” with amazing sublimation products from Artesprix. The possibilities for custom gifts, home décor and DIY projects are only limited by your imagination – so let that creativity flow! I hope this inspires you to think outside the box and turn your current craft supplies into something uniquely beautiful by pairing them with sublimation blanks for a whole new way to stretch your crafty stash!

Happy Crafting,

Kelly Nagy
