Paisley Bookmark with Artesprix Sublimation Acrylic Paint

Hi there! This is returning Guest Designer Rekha! I’m an artist, illustrator and crafter.  I’m thrilled to be back on the Artesprix blog during Craft Month! In today’s project I’m going to show you how to design a very loose paisley inspired bookmark using newly launched Sublimation Acrylic paints colors. These Bookmarks come in a set of 4 and are currently on sale to celebrate National Craft Month, so don't miss that!

What is Sublimation Iron-on-Ink?
Sublimation Iron-on-Ink is a range of products by Artesprix that allow you to create one-of-a-kind designs and heat-transfer it onto a sublimation blank using a home iron.  Once a design is transferred onto a blank, it is permanent. No additional glazing or finishing is required.  The Artesprix line of sublimation iron-on-inks include acrylic paints, markers, stamp pads and a variety of sublimation blanks to print on.

Pencil (regular HB pencil)
Copy paper
Home Iron
Paint tray, paper palette or paper plate
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Trace the bookmark onto a piece of copy paper. If you trim down your paper, leave an additional ½” inch border around the bookmark template. Your pencil lines will not transfer during the sublimation process.

Step 2: Draw a paisley inspired design with a pencil. Draw different motifs and arrange them in a pleasing manner. Alternatively, you can paint very simple loose florals as in this example.

I first painted in orange circles randomly spread out and then filled in the background with purple. I added in a green center dot. Either design works - the idea is that they are loose without defining lines.
Pro Tip: Search Google images or Pinterest to find paisley designs for inspiration.

Step 3: Select the sublimation acrylic paint colors that you want to use and squeeze some paint onto a paint tray or paper palette. Using a small paintbrush, paint in the design and background.
Pro Tip #2: Leave the background white if you don’t want to fill it in. Let it dry.

Step 4: Secure the bookmark facedown on top of the painted design with heat tape.
Step 5: Add a piece of protective paper under the painted design copy paper and one layer on top. Place the sublimation sandwich on top of the project mat.
Step 6: If using a home iron, like I am, set the iron to the highest setting. Be sure to turn off the steam. Once the iron is hot, apply it to the "Sublimation Sandwich". Hold stationary, add pressure, for 2-3 minutes.

Step 7: Lift up a corner of the paper to see if the design has transferred onto the bookmark. If you see it has not transferred properly, apply heat to it again.
Step 8: Once satisfied, remove the heat tape. You’re done! You now have your very own beautifully loose painted paisley design bookmark!
